Why a personal paper shredder?

If your initial reaction is that you have no use (or room!) for a personal paper shredder in your home, think again…

Most of us in the UK are well aware that official state documents are often shredded to prevent the disclosure of sensitive information. And if you work in a lawyer’s office, or for a dental or medical practice, you or your colleagues no doubt routinely shred in-house documentation to protect the identity of your clients.

But what about back at home sweet home?  Do we really need to clutter up our desk (or under it) with yet another gadget?  Well, if that gadget happens to be a paper shredder then yes, you do – and for two reasons.

Reasons to invest in a personal shredder for your old paperwork

You may think that when you throw paper you’ve finished with out in the bin, that’s the end of it. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, that piece of paper is just beginning a journey which could, potentially, eventually transport it into the hands of an unscrupulous fraudster.

This might happen if a rogue gust of wind catches in when it’s tipped into the recycling bin.  However, what is much more likely is that the fraudsters or their associates comb your (and your neighbours’) paper recycling bins for any useful bank details, dates of birth of member of your family, details of employers etc.

Once they have the requisite information, it’s all too easy for them to create a new “you” who can set up accounts or spend money in your name.

Whilst this scenario might sound somewhat alarmist, sadly this sort of thing really does happen from time to time, leaving poor unsuspecting folk like yourself feeling violated and financially the worse for wear.

So don’t make life easy for the devious identity thieves. Shred all your personal documentation, as no matter how determined they are, they’d be hard pushed to piece together any paperwork that’s been thoroughly shredded or – better still – cross-shredded.
